Over time, inserting your key into your ignition or door, turning it, and extracting your key will cause both the key and ignition or lock to wear down. As the teeth of your key and the pins in the ignition lose their original shape it will become harder and harder for the key to work properly, which may result in increased fiddling, which results in increased wear, which then results in the key not working at all, or maybe even getting stuck, or worse, breaking off.
